Pensamento do dia (em inglês)

Being excellent, skillful and focused isn’t enough for your success. If you’re working alone, with the wrong skills and focused on the wrong things, the only thing you are doing is loosing your time.

Welcome 2007

Just back from the party we had in Paulo and Tina’s house. I don’t want you to think that was a simple party. It was a magic, splendorous and good time with friends. It was simple the best new-year party I have since I can remember.

Anyways, I’m not here to talk about the party. This is a very personal matter :)

I just want to drop here my best wishes for 2007. Have great professional and personal moments in the year that started today.

See you in 2007

And this is my last post for the year 2006. I’ll be having a party in Paulo and Tina’s house. All my friends will be there and I already burned the CDs to listen all night and all day. Here’s what we will be listening (if nobody kills me after the first track :) )

:) :)

Have a great Reveillon and see you in 2007

I’m so naive…

Recently I found in a newspaper an announcement regarding an Idea contest to raise funds for Startups.

I did have my shot on the contest. But guess on what? I gone with an idea for a startup offering Open Source professional support and training. So far, so good - though 70% of CEOs in Portugal does not know what Open Source is.

My stupid naiveness is that the contest was sponsored by Microsoft, so my chances to get a spot in the podium were immediately nail down to 0%.

Hey dude, Microsoft and Open Source are incompatible, though their efforts to get into OS community.

Discover by the process of evolution

You may think I’m not agreeing with my self on this post, but this is not the case. We should have a good sense on how to solve problems. Sometimes we are able to define the entire problem and understand it well. But may be occasions where we cannot define it 100%. So what is the best solution?

  1. Stay forever trying to figure out what the problem is
  2. Jump into a solution, for a not well defined problem, and get the process of evolution bring all the problem’s variables

There’s no rule of thumb and we have to have an engineering sense that tell us when we are ready to jump into a solution. Whenever you feel secure about your problem definition then jump into a solution. If all variables of the problem were not identified previously, you’ll see how naturally they’ll come in.

I already experienced the feeling of having to decide which path to follow, and one thing I’m convinced, you must have an engineering sense.

Are you thinking to start a Startup

I found a valuable resource you can read about starting a startup. Is a quite controversial article but having many facts that you should be aware of.

I found very interesting the way Paul expose the traditional learning environment and how does school (doesn’t) help us to get a startup up and running with success.

I think Paul is very pragmatic with his ideas. A phrase I liked a lot, and which I quote here:

You don’t get money from your work but from doing things that people want

This is a fact. And is this leaned in school?
